Master CELPIP Writing Task 1 (Email) and Task 2 (Survey) with proven templates, scoring tips, and sample high-scoring responses. Target CLB 9-12.
CELPIP Writing is where most students either shine or struggle. The good news? With the right templates and strategies, scoring CLB 9+ is very achievable. This guide covers both Task 1 (Email) and Task 2 (Survey Response) with templates, examples, and common mistakes to avoid.
CELPIP Writing Scoring Criteria
Each writing task is scored on 4 dimensions:
| Criteria | Weight | What Raters Look For | |----------|--------|---------------------| | Content & Coherence | 25% | Addresses all prompt points, logical flow, clear paragraphs | | Vocabulary | 25% | Range, precision, collocations, no repetition | | Grammar | 25% | Accuracy, sentence variety, complex structures | | Task Fulfillment | 25% | Correct format, appropriate tone, word count |
CLB 9 vs CLB 7 โ the difference:
- CLB 7: Addresses the prompt, basic vocabulary, some grammar errors, simple sentences
- CLB 9: Fully addresses all points, varied vocabulary, minimal errors, complex sentence structures, clear organization
Task 1: Writing an Email (27 minutes)
The Format
You'll see a prompt describing a situation and asking you to write an email. The prompt specifies:
- Who you're writing to (friend, manager, landlord, etc.)
- Why you're writing (complaint, request, invitation, etc.)
- 3 specific points you must address
Your email should be 150-200 words. Going under 150 hurts your score. Over 200 is fine if the content is good.
Email Template (CLB 9+)

[Point 3 โ 2-3 sentences addressing the third requirement.] I would greatly appreciate it if [specific action you want them to take].
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.

Sample High-Scoring Email
Prompt: Your neighbour has been playing loud music late at night. Write an email to your building manager to: (1) describe the problem, (2) explain how it affects you, (3) request a solution.
Dear Mr. Thompson,
I am writing to bring to your attention a noise issue that has been significantly affecting my daily life in Unit 405.
Over the past two weeks, my neighbour in Unit 406 has been playing extremely loud music almost every night between 11 PM and 2 AM. The bass is so intense that my walls and furniture visibly vibrate, making it completely impossible to fall asleep.
This persistent noise has been severely impacting both my work performance and health. As a software developer who starts work at 8 AM, I desperately need adequate rest. I have already tried speaking with my neighbour directly, but unfortunately, the situation has not improved.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could remind all tenants of the building's quiet hours policy and perhaps speak with Unit 406 directly. If the issue persists, I may need to explore formal complaint procedures.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.
Sincerely, Sarah Chen

Sample High-Scoring Survey Response
Prompt: Your city council is deciding between investing in public transportation or building more parking lots. Which option would benefit the community more?
I firmly believe that investing in public transportation would benefit our community far more than constructing additional parking lots.
First and foremost, an enhanced public transit system would significantly reduce traffic congestion throughout the city. For instance, cities like Vancouver and Toronto have demonstrated that reliable bus and rail networks can decrease rush-hour traffic by up to 30%. This not only saves commuters valuable time but also reduces their daily stress levels considerably.
Additionally, public transportation is substantially more environmentally sustainable. Each bus can replace approximately 40 individual cars on the road, leading to measurable reductions in carbon emissions and air pollution โ an increasingly critical concern for urban communities.
While parking lots might seem like a practical short-term solution, they actually encourage more driving, worsening the very congestion they aim to alleviate. This creates a counterproductive cycle that undermines long-term urban planning.
In conclusion, public transportation investment offers both immediate practical benefits and lasting environmental advantages that parking infrastructure simply cannot match.

Common Mistakes That Drop Your Score
- Not addressing all points โ The #1 mistake. If the prompt lists 3 things, cover ALL 3.
- Wrong tone โ Formal language to a friend sounds robotic. Casual language to a manager sounds unprofessional.
- Too short โ Under 150 words signals you can't express complex ideas.
- Repeating the same words โ Use synonyms: "important โ crucial โ essential โ vital"
- No paragraphs โ A wall of text screams "poor organization."
- Spelling errors โ Use the spell-check habit: always reread before submitting.
- Simple sentences only โ "I like this. It is good. I want this." = CLB 5. Mix simple and complex structures.
