Tips:

The Computer Interface
CELPIP is 100% computer-based. Here's what the interface looks like:
Screen Layout
- Timer in the top-right corner (counts down for each section)
- Question number and navigation on the side
- Audio controls for Listening (play button โ one click only!)
- Text box for Writing (basic editor, no spell-check)
- Record button for Speaking (turns on/off automatically)
Important Interface Notes
- You cannot go back to previous sections once time expires
- Within a section, you can navigate between questions (Reading)
- The Writing text box has no spell-check or grammar tools
- Speaking recording starts and stops automatically โ a countdown timer shows when to begin
The Test: Section by Section
Section 1: Listening (~47-55 minutes)
What happens:
- You wear headphones and listen to audio clips
- Audio plays once only โ no replay button
- Multiple-choice questions appear on screen
- You click your answer and move to the next question
Test-day tip: Adjust your headphone volume during the tutorial. Too quiet = missed words. Too loud = fatigue after 50 minutes.
Section 2: Reading (~55-60 minutes)
What happens:
- Text passages appear on screen
- Multiple-choice questions beside or below the text
- You can scroll through the passage
- You can navigate between questions within the section
Test-day tip: Use the on-screen timer strategically. If you've spent 4+ minutes on one question, mark your best guess and move on.
Section 3: Writing (~53-60 minutes)
What happens:
- Two writing tasks, each with its own timer
- Task 1 (Email): 27 minutes
- Task 2 (Survey): 26 minutes
- Basic text editor โ no formatting, no spell-check
- Word count is NOT displayed โ estimate based on your typing
Test-day tip: Type a few practice sentences during the tutorial to get comfortable with the keyboard. Every keyboard feels slightly different.
Section 4: Speaking (~15-20 minutes)
What happens:
- 8 tasks, each with preparation time + response time
- You speak into a microphone
- A timer on screen shows your remaining time
- Recording starts/stops automatically โ you don't need to press anything
Test-day tip: Position the microphone about 2-3 inches from your mouth. Too close = distortion. Too far = low volume. Speak at a normal conversational volume.
Breaks
Official break policy:
- There is a short unscheduled break between sections (usually a few minutes)
- You cannot leave for a long break during the test
- Total test time is approximately 3 hours
Managing fatigue:
- Stretch your hands and neck during transition screens
- Take a deep breath between sections
- If your eyes feel strained, close them for 5 seconds during transitions
- The Speaking section is last โ you'll be tired, but it's also the shortest
Dealing with Problems
Technical issues:
- Headphones not working? โ Raise your hand immediately. Staff will replace them.
- Computer freezing? โ Don't panic. Raise your hand. The test can be restarted from where you left off.
- Noisy neighbour? โ You can request to move. The invigilator will help.
Personal issues:
- Need the washroom? โ Raise your hand. You'll be escorted, but your timer keeps running.
- Feeling sick? โ You can withdraw and reschedule (contact Paragon Testing).
- Panic attack? โ Breathe slowly. Close your eyes for 10 seconds. Remember: one bad question doesn't ruin your score.
After the Test
Results:
- Available online in 4-5 business days
- Check at celpip.ca with your login
- Score report shows CLB level for each section
- Valid for 2 years from test date
If you're not happy with your score:
- You can retake the test (no waiting period, but need new registration)
