CELPIP Speaking Task 3: Describing a Scene โ€” Tips & Templates

Master CELPIP Speaking Task 3 with scene description templates, spatial vocabulary, and strategies to fill 60 seconds confidently.

CELPIP Speaking Task 3 shows you an image and gives you 60 seconds to describe it. It's one of the easiest tasks to score well on โ€” if you have a systematic approach. Here's the template that guarantees you fill the time with high-quality content.

What to Expect

You'll see a detailed image on screen โ€” it could be:

  • A park scene with people doing activities
  • A busy restaurant or cafรฉ
  • An office or workplace
  • A street scene or market
  • A family gathering or event

You get 30 seconds to study the image, then 60 seconds to describe it.

The 4-Layer Description Template

Describe the image in layers โ€” from big picture to small details:

Layer 1: Overview (10 seconds)

"In this image, I can see [overall scene โ€” what, where]. It appears to be [time/setting/atmosphere]."

Layer 2: Main Subjects (15-20 seconds)

"In the center / foreground, there is [main person/activity]. They appear to be [action/emotion]. Next to them, I can see [another person/element]."

Layer 3: Supporting Details (15-20 seconds)

"On the left/right side, I notice [detail]. In the background, there's [detail]. I can also see [additional element], which suggests [interpretation]."

Layer 4: Atmosphere & Impression (10 seconds)

"Overall, the scene gives a [adjective] impression. It seems like [interpretation โ€” people are enjoying themselves / it's a busy day / etc.]."

Sample Response

Image: A busy farmers' market with vendors, shoppers, and various stalls.

"In this image, I can see a vibrant outdoor farmers' market that appears to be taking place on a beautiful sunny morning.

In the foreground, there's a young woman carefully selecting fresh tomatoes from a colourful vegetable stall. She's holding a reusable cloth bag and seems to be examining each tomato quite thoughtfully. Right beside her, an elderly gentleman is chatting enthusiastically with the vendor, who's wearing a bright green apron.

On the left side of the image, I notice a flower stall with stunning bouquets of sunflowers and roses, attracting several shoppers who are admiring the arrangements. In the background, there are additional stalls selling what appears to be artisan bread and homemade jams. There are also families with children walking between the stalls, and I can spot a small dog on a leash near one of the tables.

Overall, the scene conveys a wonderful sense of community and warmth. Everyone appears to be thoroughly enjoying their Saturday morning at the market, and the atmosphere feels incredibly welcoming and lively."
